Overview
This two-minute interactive projection mapping installation explores how human touch can be transformed into vivid visual expressions through responsive digital patterns. Centered on the idea of a “sensory map,” the piece investigates the dynamic relationship between the body, imagery, and technology.My role in this team is Creative Director and Animator for this project. Together with my teammate Jennifer, we developed the entire concept, design, and animation.
CONCEPT
DEVELOPMENT
This project explores how interactive 3D patterns can transform human touch into color and texture changes. These patterns will be projected onto a wall and will respond in real time to different types of physical interaction by changing texture, color, and motion, such as gentle touches or rhythmic tapping.
STORYBOARD
Building on the concept of a “sensory map,” we explored how 3D forms could visualize abstract sensations and enhance interactive experiences within the installation. We designed dynamic visual patterns—such as shifting particles and assembling or disbanding cube structures—that respond directly to touch. Through color transitions, diverse textures, and an element of randomness, the visuals highlight the unpredictability of sensory input and the uniqueness of each participant’s interaction.

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES
We will begin by using Cinema 4D to design and create a series of 3D patterns, such as particle-based wave fields or geometric modules (e.g., rectangular arrays) that can aggregate and disperse.
These animations will be rendered in C4D, then composited in After Effects for color adjustments.
Afterward, the content will be imported into MadMapper, where we will test and develop interactive mapping techniques. Using MadMapper's sensor input capabilities, we will explore how different user interactions (such as gentle touches or rhythmic taps) can trigger real-time changes in the projection's color, speed, and shape. The final setup will be tested through projection on a physical wall surface.

FINAL STYLEFRAMES
These are the four main 3D motion scenes I worked on. I used fields to control the size, color, rotation, and dissipation of abstract shapes and particles, simulating a heartbeat, glass beads, oceanic cells, and clusters of bubbles, accompanied by matching sound effects.

MADMAPPER TEST
We rendered both black-and-white and color versions of the 3D visuals and used MadMapper with Makey Makey to let touch sensors trigger the switch between them. The color version was paired with sound effects such as heartbeats and bubbling. To enhance the sensory experience, we projected the animations onto white and transparent balloons, creating strong color contrasts on white surfaces and refracted light patterns on transparent ones.
